ABOUT ABORTION PILLS

The abortion pill is an early termination method. The first dose blocks progesterone, a pregnancy hormone that helps the embryo develop. The second pill causes the uterus to expel the embryo, inducing contractions and early labor.

Side effects can include:

  • Bleeding and blood clots

  • Heavy cramping and contractions

  • Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea

  • Fever and/or infection

  • Thinning of the uterine lining

  • Allergic reactions

  • Stomach and abdominal pain

  • Uterine rupture

  • Incomplete abortion and more

Because menstrual cycles can be unpredictable, an ultrasound should be performed so you can find out exactly how far along you are. It is dangerous to take the abortion pill if you are more than 10 weeks pregnant, have health conditions that make you ineligible for a chemical abortion, or have an ectopic pregnancy.

The abortion pill is not the same as emergency contraceptives or morning-after pills. Due to safety concerns, the FDA issued a warning about ordering abortion pills online. We do not provide or refer for abortion services or charge for our pregnancy services.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE AN ABORTION

It’s your pregnancy, your future, and your choice. We care about you and want to empower you to make a fully informed decision. Before an abortion, there are several things you need to know.

  1. Has your pregnancy been confirmed? Does this determine the cost or price of an abortion? Even if you've had a positive pregnancy test, you will need an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy and determine how far along you are. Due to the possibility of a natural miscarriage, we also recommend verifying your HCG levels.

  2. Is your pregnancy occurring in the uterus? It's important to rule out an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy before you take any medication or before a procedure. An ectopic pregnancy can be a life-threatening condition.

  3. Have you been tested for STDs? An untreated infection can cause major complications if not treated prior to an abortion.

  4. Do you have any health conditions that could rule out a medication abortion? The abortion pill is not an option for women with certain health conditions. Learn more about any possible restrictions and potential side effects of medication abortions.

  5. Do you know your Rh factor? This information can determine if you need a RhoGAM shot after an abortion is complete.

If you are unsure about the answer to any of these questions, we can help. Contact us today to make an appointment at Compass Pregnancy and Family Resource Center. We serve students from Newberry High School and Bay Mills Community College.
